Just because a poet never saw her, or this Sander fellow “likely never saw her,” this does not mean they didn’t have sources. Sanders sounds like a zealot who wanted to believe these things. Some of the most beautiful clear complexions I’ve seen are on olive skinned or black skinned people. I don’t that works as an argument. The people of the British Isles suffered great damage from his behaviour and in many ways did not recover their amour propre until the end of the 17th Century. I agree wit...Thanks for this fascinating argument! I agree with you--the signs are all there. His responsibility avoidance tactics, ruthless abuse, and self-perception of blameless victimhood whenever the chips were down...it's all there. I also think it's interesting that he, like so many other narcissist/sociopaths, seemed to know what he could and couldn't get away with. For example--he didn't dare to have Katherine of Aragon executed for fear of retribution from her powerful allies. Nor could he conveniently execute Anne of Cleves for similar reasons. Only the women who were both his subjects and of a lower social class died at his command. Jane Seymour wasn't vilified and killed because she died before the period of extreme idealization (a hallmark of malignant/predatory narcissism) had run its course. Henry's wives fall from the heights of perfection seemingly overnight. He could not seem to perceive others as being complex and nuanced--they were either perfectly evil or they were perfectly good. It is horrific...and fascinating. I think Cromwell figured it was either her or him and he opted for "her." He followed the tried and true prescriptive for eliminating something the king deemed inconvenient. He did it so well in fact, that five centuries later these allegations are still believed by some.
I believe that with the exception of Henry, anyone involved even peripherally in his court existed in varying states of mortal fear.
Thanks for a very interesting piece.Anonymoushttps://www.blogger.com/profile/01571664920465440639noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3542714327031525825.post-84038474859544024182018-05-27T17:41:23.228-04:002018-05-27T17:41:23.228-04:00I am also a descendant of Margaret through her dau...I am also a descendant of Margaret through her daughter Ursula and then daughter Dorothy. Henry VII conversely had some 70,000-80,000 people killed during his reign, including More, Fisher, and others who "got in his way", and he was "loved"? He may have been loved initially by his people, but his cruelty knew no bounds. When not murdering wives and friends, he profited by wrenching the English people away from their 1,000 year old spiritual and religious traditions, closing abbeys and convents that had provided the people with schools, hospices, orphanages, and employment. These he sold or gave them to his cronies. Look up "Pilgrimage of Grace" to see how Henry was "loved".

As for the women whom he married, it's true that the public didn't want Ann, preferring Catherine, but there is nothing to suggest that they hated his other wives. There was a young woman, discounted as she was far too young and an older woman over 60, believed to be Margaret Pole, who was 69 when she was executed. A third woman, identified as Anne was about 28 to 30 or so by their measurements. The lady had long fingers, not a sixth finger, had long bones, was slender and her neck bones were slightly long and elegant. The remains were sealed in a new lead box, with a new pine box outside, labelled and reburied with a ceremony. The alter and beautiful tiles we see today mark their place of rest. The Victorians did not have DNA, did not have a CT scanner, did not know about strontium analysis or how to age people correctly and did not have the advantage we have. They used measurement for identifying people. However, all of this means they may not have identified Anne at all. The approximate age makes it very possible that it is Anne and this was the area of her burial. The Victorians did measure very accurately, but the positive identity cannot be made 100% with no DNA or a coffin bearing her name. Unknown is correct. There is a link to the article on the Anne Boleyn files somewhere. Also if anyone is a member of the Tudor Society, Claire did a video talk on this from the original report.BanditQueenhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/00882124187978187632noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3542714327031525825.post-71111203449688979712018-01-17T22:28:30.811-05:002018-01-17T22:28:30.811-05:00I don't accept this was Chapuys acknowledging ...I don't accept this was Chapuys acknowledging Anne as Queen.
